Reaction with methyl propiolate under phase-transfer conditions gives (Z)- 3-(phenylsulfonyl)prop-2-enoate, a useful dienophile; for details and discussion, see: Org. Synth. Coll., 8, 458 (1993):
Aromatics such as benzene, toluene or chlorobenzene undergo electrophilic sulfination in triflic acid to give high yields of diaryl sulfoxides: Chem. Commun., 2099 (1996). The reaction is also applicable to other sodium arene- or alkanesulfinates, but with activated aromatics and alkanesulfinates, further reaction to give the sulfonium triflate tends to occur.
