- 极其钝感的炸药:硝酸铵是极其钝感的炸药，比安全炸药c4更为钝感。一支工业8#雷管(起爆c4只是用6#就可以了)都不足以起爆混合了敏化剂的硝酸铵。硝酸铵是最难起爆的硝酸炸药，撞击感度是：50kg锤50cm落高，不会发生爆炸。而著名炸药硝化甘油的撞击感度是200g锤，20cm落高，100%爆炸。而且硝酸铵一旦溶于水，起爆感度更是大大下降，根本是人力不可能撞击引爆硝酸铵。
- 两个主要特性:1,易溶于水，溶水时吸热、易吸湿和结块，产品一般制成颗粒状。硝酸铵有5种晶型：其代号分别为 α（四面晶系）、β（斜方晶系）、γ（斜方晶系）、δ（四方晶系）、ε（正方晶系）。每种晶型仅在一定温度范围内稳定，晶型转变时伴有热效应和体积变化。特别是当环境温度在32.1°C上下变动时，颗粒硝酸铵会自身碎裂成粉状而引起结块。有两种防结块方法:1,可在硝酸铵中加入约1％的硫酸铵与磷酸氢二铵混合物；2,在欧洲一些国家还用硝酸镁作为硝酸铵的防结块剂。 2,易发生热分解，温度不同，分解产物也不同。纯硝酸铵在常温下是稳定的，对打击、碰撞或摩擦均不敏感。但在高温、高压和有可被氧化的物质存在下会发生爆炸，在生产、贮运和使用中必须严格遵守安全规定。
